The 10 Granites

1. Black Galaxy

India's most globally recognised export granite, quarried exclusively in Ongole, Andhra Pradesh. Its jet-black background is punctuated by bronze-to-gold hypersthene crystal specks that catch light dramatically, creating an unmistakable visual signature. It is the default choice for hotel lobbies requiring immediate visual impact, and its near-zero porosity (water absorption typically below 0.1%) makes it equally appropriate for high-traffic wet areas such as pool decks and spa facilities.

2. Steel Grey

Quarried in the same Ongole region as Black Galaxy, Steel Grey offers a deep charcoal base with finer, more uniform silver-grey crystalline patterning. Where Black Galaxy commands attention, Steel Grey provides a sophisticated, neutral backdrop that works with a wide range of interior palettes. It is extensively specified for airport terminal flooring, corporate reception areas, and large-format exterior cladding, where tonal consistency across large runs of material is a priority.

3. Tiger Skin

A dramatic flowing-pattern granite from Rajasthan, Tiger Skin features bold irregular veining in cream, brown, and rust tones against a lighter beige-grey matrix. Its movement and visual complexity make it a strong design statement for accent walls, lift lobbies, and reception desks in hospitality and retail environments. The pattern variation between slabs is significant; bookmatching is recommended for feature wall applications.

4. Viscon White

Quarried in Tamil Nadu, Viscon White is a light grey granite with a fine crystalline texture and subtle cloud-like white and grey patterning. It is popular in commercial applications where the design intent calls for a bright, clean aesthetic without the maintenance challenges of marble. Its hardness and low porosity make it practical for retail and food-service flooring where frequent cleaning is required.

5. Alaska Gold

A warm-toned granite from Rajasthan with rich golden-yellow to amber background and dark grey mineral inclusions. Alaska Gold adds warmth and opulence to commercial interiors, particularly in hospitality projects targeting a traditional or heritage aesthetic. It performs well on feature walls and reception counters where its colour depth reads beautifully under warm lighting.

6. Imperial Red

One of India's boldest commercial granites, Imperial Red from Karnataka delivers deep crimson to burgundy tones with large feldspar crystals giving it a coarse, dramatic texture. It is a traditional choice for government buildings, heritage restoration projects, and prestige commercial developments where permanence and gravitas are the specification intent. Its high compressive strength makes it suitable for heavily loaded paving applications.

7. Titanium Gold

A premium granite from Andhra Pradesh with a rich golden-brown base and scattered black mineral inclusions creating a structured, luxurious appearance. Titanium Gold has grown in popularity for hotel bathroom vanities, restaurant flooring, and retail flagship store interiors where the material needs to signal quality without the visual aggression of stronger patterned stones.

8. Lavender Blue

Quarried in Andhra Pradesh, Lavender Blue (also known as Blue Pearl in some markets) is distinctive for its blue-grey iridescence — a labradorescent optical effect caused by light interacting with feldspar minerals. Under changing light conditions, the stone appears to shift between grey and electric blue. This property makes it a popular choice for exclusive retail environments and luxury residential lobbies where visual impact is the primary brief.

9. Paradiso Brown

From Karnataka, Paradiso Brown features a rich burgundy-brown base with a complex swirling pattern of grey, pink, and cream minerals. Its movement and tonal complexity make it well-suited to high-specification commercial applications: hotel lobby floors, conference room feature walls, and luxury retail countertops. The pattern variation is significant between blocks; for large installations, selecting from consistent blocks at the factory stage is recommended.

10. Lasa Black (Absolute Black)

Quarried in Karnataka (often sold under the name Indian Black or Absolute Black), this is a near-uniform, very fine-grained jet-black granite with minimal visible crystalline pattern. Its uniformity makes it the preferred choice for applications where a completely consistent colour field is required: signage panels, monumental features, and architectural details where texture would distract from form. It is also widely used for kitchen countertops where the client wants the pure graphic quality of solid black.

What to Look for in Commercial-Grade Granite

Not all granite sold under the same name is equivalent in quality. For commercial projects where material failure carries significant consequences, apply a more rigorous evaluation standard than you might for residential work.

  • Consistency across the order. Commercial projects often require material from multiple containers. Request batch testing and, where possible, select all slabs from inspected stock before shipment. Colour and pattern variation between batches can be problematic on large continuous floor installations.
  • Test reports from accredited labs. Do not accept supplier-produced test data. Request reports from NABL-accredited (India) or internationally recognised laboratories. Key tests: ASTM C97 (water absorption), ASTM C880 (flexural strength), DIN 51130 (slip resistance for flooring).
  • Thickness tolerance. For large-format floor tiles and slabs, thickness tolerance is critical for a flush installation. Standard tolerance is ±1mm. Tighter tolerances (±0.5mm) should be specified in writing for mechanical fixing systems.
  • Surface finish consistency. Polished granite should have consistent gloss across the entire slab surface. Inspect for edge polish inconsistency, which is common on lower-quality processing runs.

Slip Resistance Ratings for Different Applications

Slip resistance is the most frequently overlooked specification parameter in commercial granite projects. The DIN 51130 R-rating system is widely used internationally:

  • R9 — Minimum for interior pedestrian flooring in dry areas. Most polished granite achieves R9 or just below; specify anti-slip treatment if R9 is required for polished finishes.
  • R10 — Required for wet areas, kitchens, bathrooms, and exterior covered walkways. Honed or brushed finishes typically achieve R10.
  • R11 — Required for pool surrounds, exterior exposed paving, and commercial kitchen floors. Flamed or sandblasted finishes achieve R11.
  • R12 / R13 — Industrial kitchen floors and steep ramps. Requires deeply textured or profiled surfaces. Standard granite finishes rarely achieve R12 without significant surface modification.

For US projects, ANSI A326.3 (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction, DCOF) is the relevant standard. A DCOF of ≥0.42 is the typical specification threshold for commercial interior wet areas.

Thickness Recommendations for Different Uses

  • Wall cladding (interior) — 16mm or 18mm is standard. For mechanical fixing systems on exterior facades, 20mm minimum; 30mm for high-wind-load zones.
  • Floor tiles (interior, light commercial) — 18mm is typical. For heavy commercial or industrial use, 20mm.
  • Countertops and vanities — 20mm standard; 30mm for a more substantial visual presence or for integrated sinks and edge profiles.
  • Exterior paving — 30mm for pedestrian areas; 40mm or more for vehicular traffic areas. Flamed finish is strongly recommended for exterior paving.
  • Stairs and treads — 30mm minimum for structural adequacy; bullnose edge profile standard. Confirm flexural strength test results for stair tread applications.
